Winter may be a beautiful season, with clear skies and frosty mornings, but, let's face it, the winter weather can play havoc with your hair. Cold, dry air and harsh winds (not to mention indoor heating) can wreak havoc with your hair, causing split ends, frizziness and an uncomfortable, itchy scalp. Never fear, though, we have some great hair care tips to help you and your hair stay gorgeous through the winter months.

winter hair care tips

Stay Hydrated

We mention this hair care tip quite a lot in our posts, for the simple reason that it is paramount to the health of your hair! It doesn't matter how many expensive treatments you use - if you're not hydrated your hair will be dry and lacklustre.

Keep a bottle of water with you at all times so you can sip it throughout the day. Aim for 2 litres of water a day - it may sound a lot, but if you have a large glass of water with each meal, you'll be able to make up the rest throughout the day pretty easily.

Drinking delicious, winter-y flavoured herbal teas can also help you to hit your hydration goals. Think Chai, Spiced Green Tea and Chilli Chocolate brews.

Massage Your Scalp

This is one of the most pleasant hair care tips! By massaging your scalp with your fingertips, you can help to exfoliate old skin cells and encourage new cell growth and healing. Massage increases blood flow to the area, and helps you to relax. Give your scalp a massage before going to bed and also before showering to really notice the benefits.

Use Hot Oil Treatments

Hot oil treatments can be used whatever your hair type (yes even those of you with oily hair!). The treatment is a fantastic way to re-moisturise your hair and leave it looking soft and silky. How about combining this hair care tip with the two previous ones into a specialised hair care regime just so: First, run yourself a hot bath. Then enjoy a relaxing scalp massage, and follow it up with a hot oil treatment. Lovely!

Take Hair Care Supplements

If you visit your local health shop and talk to one of the staff, they will be able to show you the best hair supplements they have in stock. Look for one that includes vitamin C, vitamin E and vitamin A. Zinc is also an important mineral to include in your diet or as a supplement to keep your hair strong and healthy.

It's worth mentioning here that while supplements can help to keep your hair looking great in the winter months, a well-balanced diet is also essential for making sure you get all the nutrients you need to stay healthy and happy all year round.

Get a Great Hat

Sometimes hair care tips are not about treating your hair, but simply about protecting it. Look after your hair while you're out and about by keeping it covered. Find a nice, soft hat with great colours that you love and you'll be ready to head out no matter what the weather.

Looking after your hair needn't be a chore. As you can see, looking after your hair basically means looking after yourself and taking some time out for a nice pamper session now and then! When you look at it this way, keeping up with these hair care tips through the winter months will become an enjoyable part of your weekly routine.
